DRINKS WITH FRENEMIES
Drinks with Frenemies is a social card game and the first release from Be Game LLC. It is reminiscent of classic drinking games and games like Cards Against Humanity. Created as a party game that can be played with or without drinking, Drinks with Frenemies aims to sabotage your friends with embarrassing, difficult, or flat-out silly tasks. Drinks with Frenemies is already released, with different base game and booster packs to customize your gameplay to be more family-friendly, retro, explicit, or not safe for work. PAX WEST 2021 INTERVIEW
Erik Cancel, Developer of Drinks with Frenemies, with SarahSweetBee
SarahSweetBee: What game are you working on and what do you do?
Cancel: So, I have created the game Drinks for Frenemies. We have six editions currently, we have three coming out in the next year or so, and there are also two other games coming out called Ding Dong and Polar.
SarahSweetBee: Can you give us a small summary of your game?
Cancel: Absolutely. So, it is the sabotaging party game. So basically what you’re doing is looking at your cards and picking which friend you want to mess with for that turn.
SarahSweetBee: What would you say inspired your game the most?
Cancel: It’s basically getting people to socialize, get them out of their shells and having a good time. You know, being able to laugh at yourself and others is a great thing, I think, for society, that we need to come together with.
SarahSweetBee: If you could go back and begin again from scratch, would you change anything, and if so, what would you change?
Cancel: Ooh, that’s—that’s a good one. Um, I would...oof! That—that’s a deep, deep question to ask! [laughs]
SarahSweetBee: You want me to go to another one?
Cancel: No, no! Uh, what would I change? Hmm. I mean, I guess... So I’m doing a third print run on my earlier decks, just ’cause I’ve changed wording. That’s— I mean, I guess that’s the biggest thing, is just my wording on it. [laughs]
SarahSweetBee: What has been your favorite part of your development process?
Cancel: Oh, seeing the laughter and smiles on people. My biggest joy is seeing people read my cards and like, getting the biggest chuckle. Like, that’s my pure enjoyment right there.
SarahSweetBee: How did you come up with the questions?
Cancel: So it is super random. I can hear someone say a word or phrase—so for instance I have one that’s ‘balls to the wall.’ I was literally at a yellow light and could have made it, but I stopped, and I said to myself, “Aw, I should have went balls to the wall!” And then I got to thinking about the game and I’m like, “Wait, what if people actually run to a wall and place their crotch up against it?” So just the most random things and it occurs.
SarahSweetBee: I love that! All right, is there anything else you want us to know about your game, your company?
Cancel: So, I am a family-owned business and we are independent and you can find us on our website drinksforfrenemies.com. We are sometimes on Amazon as we sell out often, so we try to keep up with stock, but we have conventions that we do across the country and we are actually going across the seas to do some conventions as well. So just look out for our newer games and if you haven’t seen our current games, please check those out.
