MUSIC & SOUND QUALITY 8/10

Oh, have I mentioned the bar’s incredible music yet? Anglerfish is also filled with marvelously original tracks by A. Fabrin, Michael Fynne, Pretext, and my personal favorite, leunbach.

GAMEPLAY 7/10

Armed with a shotgun and a strong stomach for disturbing exploration, your goal is to make it out of the Anglerfish alive. The game starts over every time you die, and each time, something changes depending on how you died. Jump scares await around nearly every corner. However, death is not something to be feared as you uncover secrets deep in the core of the Anglerfish. Solving the bar’s mysteries is the key to surviving long enough to see the sunrise.

And yes, you can pet the dog.

STORY & CHARACTERS 7/10

It’s look-a-like Thursday (whatever that means), and your buddy has dragged you out to a remote taproom to celebrate his upcoming nuptials with a wild night. Your friends decide to have a friendly competition to see who will earn the honor of being his best man. It’s all fun and games until suddenly someone dies. Do you have what it takes to survive a night out with the boys?

My favorite part of this game is that its story is based on real events.

OVERALL 8.5/10

Backed by the Danish Film Institute, this single-player psychological horror is set to release in the second half of 2022. Anglerfish is being developed by Professional Villains, a small indie studio in Denmark that focuses on creating interactive, story-driven games. With a master’s degree in interactive dramaturgy and a degree in screenwriting, John is the evil genius behind the stories and designs of Anglerfish. His partner, Maria, is the mastermind behind the monstrosities that lurk deep within Anglerfish. With an art and digital design background, Maria has dedicated her life to studying monsters in games and throughout history. Her intimate understanding of the unnatural makes Professional Villains’ games so terrifying.
